I always enjoy returning to The Business Elevation Show with Chris Cooper because it gives us the space to go beyond the theory and really explore what is happening in practice when it comes to relationships in business and life.

In this conversation, Chris and I picked up on a theme that continues to grow in importance: if we genuinely want to make a positive difference — whether in our organisations, our careers, or the wider world — then the quality of our relationships really does determine what is possible.

Over the past 25 years I’ve been fortunate to work with leaders and teams in organisations such as Google, PayPal and the BBC, and to contribute to platforms including Harvard Business Review and Psychology Today. But what continues to shape my thinking most is not the logos or the titles — it’s the consistent evidence that success, in any meaningful sense, is built on relationships that are intentional, authentic, and well maintained.

Chris and I explored how my thinking has evolved since my last appearance on the show, particularly around how we build a reputation that is both global and grounded. We also discussed the realities of turning expertise into something commercially sustainable without compromising on integrity — a challenge many thought leaders, speakers, and business owners wrestle with.

Central to the discussion is my Relationship Matrix — a practical framework I use with clients to help them map, assess and strengthen the relationships that truly matter. It’s designed to move relationship-building away from something abstract or reactive, and towards something more intentional and strategic, while still remaining human at its core.

We also had an honest conversation about monetisation — specifically how to ensure that the way we generate value from our ideas and relationships feels aligned, ethical and authentic. This is an area where many people feel tension, and I believe we need more open dialogue about how to navigate it well.

Ultimately, this episode is for anyone who is building something — a business, a team, a reputation, or even a legacy — and who recognises that none of it happens in isolation.

Because however we frame it, and however sophisticated our tools become, it still comes back to one simple truth: if we want to achieve anything meaningful, relationships are where it all begins.
